A Postmortem study of 100 cases that died due to fatal mechanical injuries was conducted in which majority of cases (86%) were due to RTA followed by homicide (7%). Young males in the age group of 21–30 years (37%) were most commonly involved. Most common victims in RTA were pedestrians (40.7%) and buses were responsible for 50% cases followed by trucks (23.3%). Body region most commonly injured was head. 31% victims died immediately and 54% were dead within 24 hours. Commonest cause of death was head injury (57%) followed by haemorhagic shock (32%).
Thus it could be concluded that Fatal Injuries are a major cause of unnatural deaths. The most effective way of reducing them is to prevent their cause by modifying some of the risk factors. Rapid Transport of injured to the hospital & adequate primary care at the scene of incidence are some of the vital measures. Multidisciplinary approach is important to prevent & manage the Fatal injuries.
