Abstract

A total of 4022 autopsy cases brought to the Mortuary of Regional Institute of Medical Sciences, Imphal, during the period from January 1992 to December 2001 were studied with the objective to identify the trends of sudden deaths so as to ascertain the yearwise distribution, age and sex incidences, cause, distribution of organ systems and pathological findings among Manipuris. A total of 109 sudden deaths (2.71%) were studied from 4022 autopsy cases. The highest incidence (33.94%) fell in the age group of 31–40 years with male preponderance (11.1:1) and commonest cause of sudden death was due to cardiovascular diseases.
