Organ weights are important standard benchmarks in various disciplines of medicine, very useful in pharmacology for drug trials, in radiation medicine to set limits for radiation exposure and in medico legal cases to identify gross pathology of the organ. Geographic variation in the standard organ weights is a known fact. India being a large country, it has multiplicity of racial, geographical and socioeconomic variations, which can affect the organ weights. This study was planned to formulate standards for a Reference Indian Man. The data was drawn from post-mortem studies of 133 healthy adults who died in road traffic accidents and who showed no clinical signs of any disease. Significant difference (P<0.05) was observed in the organ weights, the total body weight and relative weight of organs when compared to earlier data. This study gives the regional data of the mean body weight and means organ weights which can contribute to the national effort to set the standards and definitive norms for the Indian Reference Man.
