Abstract

The aim of this study was to find out the pattern of suicidal hanging cases, to focus on impact of various factors and to evaluate the present situation of suicidal hanging at Bhavnagar, Gujarat, India. A prospective study was carried out on 86 cases of hanging, brought for postmortem examination at Sir T General Hospital and Government Medical College Bhavnagar, during the period of January 2011 to December 2011.

This study throw some lights on the emerging trends that incidence of hanging is increases in male, married person, lower socio economic status, poor education level, and residing at urban area at the time of incidence. Most of the victims were from the age group of 21 to 30 years. Increase in number of suicide (25.56%) in teenage is a matter of serious concern for society.

In present study most common place of incidence was home, in closed room. In maximum number of cases (34.88%), the point of suspension was ceiling fan and commonly used ligature material were cotton rope in 27.90% cases. Most frequent precipitating factor were financial problem, quarrel between couples and love affairs.
