Abstract

The review explores the transformative potential of digital agriculture in India, particularly its role in increasing farmers' incomes and addressing the challenges in agricultural production. While India ranks among the world's top producers of key crops and livestock, fragmented landholdings limit the income potential of farmers. Digital agriculture, driven by technologies like Artificial Intelligence (AI), the Internet of Things (IoT), and Big Data, offers solutions to optimize agricultural efficiency, sustainability, and profitability. The integration of precision farming tools, automated systems, and data analytics helps farmers make informed decisions, manage resources more efficiently, and reduce environmental impacts. Key digital applications, such as UAV-based remote sensing, electronic tractors, IoT-based automation, and blockchain technology, are discussed as pivotal for improving crop management, monitoring, and traceability within the agricultural value chain. Despite the clear benefits, challenges like limited digital literacy, high technology costs, poor internet connectivity, and small landholdings remain barriers to adoption. The article also highlights government initiatives aimed at promoting digitalization in agriculture, such as the National e-Governance Plan and the India Digital Ecosystem of Agriculture (IDEA). To fully realize the benefits of digital farming, the review emphasizes the need for accessible, low-cost technologies, robust infrastructure, and policies that support financial assistance, digital literacy, and trust-building among farmers.
