The rise of dating applications has significantly transformed the way people seek relationships, friendships, and casual encounters. Dating apps, designed to facilitate romantic and social connections, rely on user- specific data such as age, gender, and partner preferences. In recent years, Artificial Intelligence (AI) has become a critical element in enhancing the matchmaking process. AI technology enables more personalized experiences, improves match compatibility, and addresses concerns like user safety and privacy. However, as these algorithms become more sophisticated, the ethical implications and potential biases of AI in dating apps warrant closer examination. This conceptual study reviews AI’s role in dating apps, examining how AI is utilized by app developers to increase user engagement, from the first swipe to continuous conversations. The study reviews existing literature on the ethical concerns, algorithmic biases, and societal challenges associated with AI in online matchmaking. The findings reveal that AI-based systems offer several benefits to users, such as creating personalized matches and enhancing user interactions. These technologies enable dating app developers to provide more secure, authentic, and tailored experiences. AI also improves matchmaking accuracy by continuously learning from user behavior. However, there are significant risks associated with AI in dating apps. The algorithms can manipulate user behavior, promote addictive usage patterns, and prioritize monetization and user engagement over fostering genuine connections. The ethical concerns surrounding AI-driven dating apps highlight critical societal challenges. The potential for algorithmic bias, privacy issues, and the commercialization of dating through AI manipulation raises questions about the authenticity of the connections made. Developers and app makers must address these concerns to balance innovation with user well-being. By understanding the risks and rewards, the future of AI in dating apps could lead to more meaningful and ethical matchmaking solutions.
