A Study of a Village Knowledge Centre in a Coastal Village

Project initiators always try to prove that Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) have a profound effect on the rural people. The Government and NGOs helped in accessing the new information and communication technologies through the Information Kiosks. It has become a debate whether ICT contributes for the human development. This paper is aimed to study the consequences of the technological adoption through the survey and intrinsic case study methodology. Kovalam is one of the coastal villages at Southern Tamil Nadu. A village knowledge centre (VKC) has been initiated by the local Parish Council to serve the villagers with the e-services free of cost. The study revealed the role of the VKC in the lives of fisher folk and its contribution to the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).
