New mdia has been described as 21est century catchall term used to define all that is related to the internet and the interplay between technology, images and sound. In fact, the definition of new media changes daily, and will continue to do so. New media evolves and morphs continuously. What it will be tomorrow is virtually unpredictable for most of us, but we do know that it will continue to evolve in fast and furious ways. New media is an interactive forms of communication that use the Internet, including podcasts, RSS feeds, social networks, text messaging, blogs, wikis, virtual worlds and more so, we can say that new media is an ever-changing and morphing term which includes any digital and interactive form of communication such as PDAs, CDs, DVDs, smart-phones, multimedia phones, use of internet computers, and ICT based technologies. There are many advantages, disadvantages and extremities associated with new media, instead of these drawbacks ant extremities new media sites are very popular among the users. Many research and development activities are going on in the field of new media and how new media is influencing the young generations etc. The main aim of this research is harnessing new media for various purposes such as education, entertainment, general knowledge, benefits and drawbacks of these sites etc. Therefore, the present study entitled on new media was carried out with the objective of understanding the new media activism among the students. The postgraduate students of Institute of Agricultural Sciences and Department of Journalism & mass communication, faculty of arts, Banaras Hindu University were selected purposively for the research. A total of 180 students from Institute of Agricultural Sciences and 60 students from Journalism & mass communication constituted the sample of the study. The salient findings of the study include there was significant difference in online activities, drawbacks of new media, awareness of internet ethics, awareness of new media extremities and allowing of new media sites in BHU among both the faculties. The background and fellowship of the students had a significant role to play in the internet use frequency for students of both faculties. The respondent's background and parent's education had a significant role to play in the new media age of the respondent of both the faculties. On the contrary there was no significant difference in case of internet visiting frequency, internet use point, awareness of new media, use of new media for academic purpose, time spent on new media sites for educational purpose and category of respondent based on the adoption of new technologies except new media age, time spent on new media sites per day and most visited new media sites for both the faculties.
