Urbanisation acts as an engine of economic growth and in the absence of structural anomaly, it can deliver healthy and sustainable growth indefinitely. Further, in the absence of structural anomaly, the urbanisation in a country like India can deliver balanced inter-state and inter-regional economic growth. In fact, the developmental strategy impact economic growth by influencing the structure of urbanisation and in India, since 1991 there has been a sea change in it. Against this backdrop, the present study intends to trace the emerging trends in the structure of urbanisation in India from national and sub-national perspective over a long period of time, including pre and post liberalisation periods. Descriptive study based on secondary data obtainedfrom reliable sources is usedfor the study. The studyfinds persistence structural anomaly in the structure ofurbanisation in India both at the national and sub national levels. Also, the study finds positive but in significant structural changes in urbanisation in the post liberalisation period.
