Factors affecting team performance in it sector: An exploratory analysis

Abstract

Purpose - The key feature of any organization is Teamwork and a central inquisition in the extensive literature on teams concerns the way that team performance can be measured. This paper summarizes the concept of team performance and meant to acquire validity evidences of a teamwork performance scale for IT Sector.

Design/methodology/approach - The questionnaire was administered to 270 employees organized in 70 teams in IT sector in Pune. They answered questions asked about the team performance.The data obtained through questionnaire was analyzed by using SPSS 16.0 package. They answered nine items of the scale. Exploratory factor analysis results showed a unifactorial solution explaining 62.945% of the variance. The reliability of measure found to be of adequate value (Cronbach Alpha = .92). Findings -The results showed that the variance at the individual level was small when answers of team members were analyzed and was significant when teams were compared. We consider it is important that additional studies be performed in order to identify stability of the factor solution.

Research limitations/implications - The limitation of present is that the data was collected from 270 employees and also study conducted in context of IT Sector only, other sectors has not been taken into consideration.

Practical implications - The findings of this paper will have several implications for researchers and practitioner. It can be helpful for the managers to understand the critical variables which make teams to perform and will be more suitable in terms of getting the result.

Originality/value -The present study can be differentiated from past studies, since it mull over an ensemble of team performance elements as an essential antecedents of team performance and alsoenhances the knowledge of the researchers and practitioners about the critical variables which affects team performance and will help the managers, researchers, organizational development specialist and employees who are trying to identify the effective ways of supporting employees who are struggling with their team performance.
