Abstract

The Right To Information Act, 2005 is a comprehensive legislation enacted to confer statutory rights on the citizens of India for seeking information from any public authority and any private body, which can be accessed by a public authority under any other law for the time being in force. The Act was enacted to make a turning point in this nation’s democratic development. It has long proven to be a key component of a healthy democracy because it empowers citizens with the right to demand what activities and decisions are being made, to promote national interest. This research article discusses how media can be benefitted of this Act and at the same time this can discipline the mainstream big media by providing an alternative mechanism which gives an effective voice to ordinary citizen. This also suggests some recommendations for effective implementation of RTI Act, 2005.
