Workplace behaviour of the addicted workers at agricultural produce marketing committee, Azadpur, Delhi

Abstract

Agricultural Produce Marketing Committee (APMC), Azadpur is the largest market (Mandi) of Asia in term of handling fruit and vegetables in a year. APMC, Azadpur deals with 50 varieties of fruits and 68 varieties of vegetables. Number of registered wholesale traders is 1554, commission agent is 2121 and cold storage is 6. Altogether 12000 workers are associated to different activities in this APMC and almost all of them are unorganized. Addiction is a known problem of these unorganized workers. From different studies, it has been identified that addiction is a serious HR problem for the business houses where organized workers used to work and causing net negative impact on the business. All those studies were conducted at organized sector while there is a large number of workforce attached with unorganized sectors who are grossly associated with different types of addictions like drinking alcohol, taking narcotics, or smoking ganja or taking drugs. This study at APMC-Azadpur has been done to find relationship between the workers addiction and their different psychological / behavioural factors like Job Satisfaction, Job Involvement and Work Life Balance etc. The finding of the study is quite interesting that addiction could not impact over their workplace behavioural dynamics. All these addicted workers’ job involvement is observed high causing a direct impact over their job satisfaction. But at the conclusion, the researchers suggested some step to curb this menace for the society.
