Characterization of vegetable pea genotypes under tarai region of Uttarakhand-economic aspect

Department of Vegetable Science, College of Agriculture, GB Pant University of Agriculture and Technology, Pantnagar-263 145, Uttarakhand, India

Abstract

For assessment for yield performance, a study of some of the new genotypes of vegetable pea was made at Vegetable Research Centre, GB Pant University of Agriculture and Technology, Pantnagar, US Nagar, Uttarakhand, India. The experiment was laid out in Randomized Complete Block Design with three replications and 26 treatments (21 new genotypes and 5 commercial cultivars). Significant differences were observed for days to 50% flowering, pod diameter, number of ovules/pod, pod weight per plant and pod yield per ha. In this investigation, out of 21 genotypes and 5 commercial cultivars, genotype PMR 51 proved to be the best in respect to its yield (20.3 t/ha) and pod parameters. This genotype has also secured maximum net profit (Rs. 81, 661 ha−1) with a benefit-cost ratio of 2.00. The second best genotype which recorded higher net profit was PMR 61 with a net profit of Rs. 73, 116 ha−1. However, all the entries showed profitable economics which proved the suitability of climate for vegetable pea cultivation in tarai condition of Uttarakhand.
