To facilitate the indigenous development of 1200 kV Ultra High Voltage AC technology in India, POWERGRID in association with Indian manufacturers are establishing a 1200 kV Test Station at Bina in the state of Madhya Pradesh, India. Out of two 1200 kV bays, one bay is already charged along with the 1200 kV Single Circuit and Double Circuit lines and field tests and studies are ongoing at the test station.
This paper gives glimpses about need for UHVAC system in India and the inception of 1200 kV indigenous development concept. System studies and Insulation coordination carried for selection of basic system parameters and insulation levels are given special emphasis in the paper. The paper details various experimental studies carried out for determining air gap clearances, as well as switchyard/line configurations and layouts. Philosophy behind selection of various parameters of different UHV Equipments is also briefed. Methodology adopted for the development of test station, developmental activities, and provisions made for optimization studies is also covered in detail. Challenges in design, development, testing of equipment at factory and field have also been described. The paper also describes the status and field test results of 1200 kV equipment so far at the 1200 kV National Test Station. Key leanings in transportation, installation, commissioning and post charging monitoring of various 1200 kV equipments are also provided.
