Abstract

Importance of Earthing for the electrical installations/system is well honored now a day. Due to pressure of maintaining continuous operation with reliability and hazard free, everyone concerned is more cautious about the design of earthing system since the conception stage of the project. Designing the Earthing system for the scattered load like mining is one kind of challenging job.

This paper describes practices adopted for earthing system in substation feeding power to mining loads connected by no of HT screened cable. The concept was though old, it is more developed at University of Sydney Australia since 2000 onwards. Based on the related technical references/papers from International Journal of Engineering Research and Development, International Journal of Energy and Environment (IJEE), IEEE Transaction on Power Apparatus and System, CBIP manual on earthing system, the author has discussed with the engineers from utility of Ghana and ministry of Energy Ghana on the earthing system in general and particularly of such kind of distribution system and on the significance of specification for the earthing system. The paper demonstrates the content of discussion as a sharing of experience.
