Digital substation: concept and components

Until recent years, the focus of substation automation was limited to intelligent electronic devices installed in secondary network, such as protection relays, energy meters, RTUs etc. With the advancement of IEC61850 protocol, now digital technology can be extended even to primary devices such as instrument transformers and switchgears. This paper discusses the various components of digital substations.
