Abstract

Ever growing power demands and space constraints for electrical installations require substations with minimum footprint. In light of this shortage underground substations can be explored as a reliable and safe option. Underground substations have lately gained importance and place in the Draft Development Plans 2034 due to the growing FSI in metropolitan cities like Mumbai. Various countries in Europe and Asia have adopted this solution and are reaping benefits.

Tata Power as a distribution utility is exploring underground substation solutions collaboratively with OEMs. Public open spaces are one of the ideal locations for installation of such substations. This will call for higher degrees of safety due to its location and constant presence of people unaware of hazards of electrical installation.

This paper explores key aspects of an underground substation along with technical and safety features making it a choice of distribution utilities.
