Abstract

Diagnosis of internal defects through various online monitoring parameters for a large Transformer and to take proactive actions including outage of transformer becomes a challenge considering business interruptions. The lesson learnt with futuristic approach on design improvement, condition assessments, quality assurance, FAT and assurance checks criteria subsequent to fault contribution from transformers, are the valuable product of such experiences and exercises.

Dissolved gas analysis, Thermography & online Partial Discharge tests are such useful techniques when comply with in-depth condition monitoring. The analysis of trending, severity and peculiarity of the results can give a precise diagnosis and health assessment of large sized transformers at early stage and can save catastrophic incidences.

In this paper, four case studies of Generator Transformers rating of 3*270MVA, 400/22kVat a single Power Plant are described.

The right approach with analyzing various operating & condition monitoring parameters, early detection of area of anomalies, timely decision, identification of fault and mitigation actions avoided catastrophic damage of Transformer with saving of huge cost and business continuity impact.

The planned outage of the transformers based on the risk severity analysis had helped quality of work without business interruptions.
