Abstract

Surrogacy or surrogate motherhood is an arrangement whereby a woman agrees to become

pregnant & deliver a child for a contracted party. She may be the child's genetic mother or may act as a gestational carrier. Surrogacy these days has reached industrial proportions with India fast emerging as the leader in it due to the congenial legal environment. Surrogate motherhood is a modern day dilemma which is now fast becoming a common alternative to the painful birthing process by the rich & a blessing to those who have tried every other procedure without a fruitful result. The concept of surrogacy is a multifaceted issue involving many individuals with varied beliefs, expectations & interests. It is not as simple as it seems but involves a plethora of complex moral, ethical, psychosocial & legal issues which need to be addressed for better understanding & handling of such a case.
