Death Due to a Rare Complication of USG-Guided Needle Aspiration of Liver Abscess: A Case Report

Liver abscesses (LA) are common in tropical countries, having significant morbidity or mortality. The image-guided percutaneous techniques play a very important role in the management of liver abscesses and are considered to reduce mortality rates in liver abscess. Percutaneous Needle Aspiration (PNA) is the least invasive, inexpensive procedure and much safer as compared to the other surgical methods. We present an autopsy case of a patient of amoebic liver abscess who died of hemorrhagic shock because of bleeding from rupture of liver abscess during PNA. The authors intend to increase the awareness of treating clinicians about this rare and unforeseen complication of a seemingly less risky procedure of PNA for the betterment of patient care.
