Abstract

Identification of an individual from skeletal remains is one of the important aspects of forensic examination. Determination of sex from the bones is one of the parameters which could help in the identification of the deceased in cases of mutilated or amputated body fragments brought for medico-legal examination. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the sexual dimorphism of the sternal end of the right 4thrib based on morphometric traits like maximum superior-inferior height (SIH) & maximum anterior-posterior breadth (APB) in 200 dead bodies (100 male & 100 female) brought to the mortuary of Maulana Azad medical college and associated hospitals, Delhi. The results showed SIH has the highest sex differentiating potential with 88.5% accuracy compared to anterior-posterior breadth with 78.5% accuracy.
