Abstract

The regulation of senescence in leaf discs by kinetin and a morphactin (MOR; chlorflurenol methyl ester-CME 74050) during light and dark was studied. A gradual breakdown of chlorophylls, carotenoids and proteins was noticed under both conditions. It revealed an increment in protease and decrease in peroxidase activity in light and dark. Total soluble sugars, however, showed a decline in dark and an increment in light. Kinetin with 37.5 μM concentration was found to be most effective in delaying senescence by slowing down enzymatic activity and reducing degradation of other plant pigments and protein.
