Abstract

The present study deals with the biodiversity of nostocalean cyanobacteria encountered from different parts of Manipur state falling under Indo-Burma biodiversity hotspots. During monsoon seasons of 2004–2010 algal and soil samples were collected for isolation and purification of cyanobacteria. Total one hundred and three (103) nostocalean strains were isolated belonging to 10 genera viz., Anabaenopsis (01), Wollea (01), Nostoc (27), Anabaena (38,), Aulosira (03), Scytonema (03), Tolypothrix (03), Microchaete (13), Calothrix (13) and Dichothrix (01). All these strains were deposited to the Freshwater Cyanobacterial Repository of IB SD, Imphal, Manipur, a creation of national freshwater cyanobacterial repository by DBT, Govt. of India (Ref. No.: BT/PR11323/PBD/26/171/2008 dated 31st March, 2009) for maintenance with allotment of temporary accession number.
