Two essential oil components linalool and limonene were estimated in the bark of male and female plants of Zanthoxylum alatum at different altitudes. In Z-1, Z-2 and Z-3 female bark linalool was found to be 8.9%, 6.4% and 6.4% and limonene to be 23.4%, 0.4% and 6% respectively. In male bark also significant variation was found. The linalool was found to be 15.8%, 36.6% and 39.46% and limonene to be 0.8%, 0.9% and 2.39% respectively.
