Abstract

Two species of genus Delonix viz. D. regia (Bojer ex Hook) Raf. and D. elata (L.) Gamble have been selected for antimicrobial screening against pathogenic bacteria and fungi. Different plant parts (alcoholic extracts), whole plants (extracted sequentially with different organic solvents) and metabolites-rich fractions have been tested against the indicator human pathogenic bacteria (Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus (Gram +ve), Pseudomonas aeruginosa (Gram +ve), and Salmonella typhi (Gram-ve), and fungi (Aspergillus flavus, Aspergillus niger, Fusarium moniliforme and Rhizoctonia bataticola). Ethanolic extract of leaves (IZ= 30 mm) shows maximum inhibitory growth against A. flavus. The sequential extracts of chloroform (IZ=23 mm) shows maximum activity, but ethanol and aqueous extract were not found effective against A. flavus. The sequential extracts of pet. ether and chloroform were effective against R. bataticola (IZ = 18 mm). Minimum inhibitory concentration test was performed by modified agar well diffusion method. MIC value 2×104 mg/disc was recorded against A. flavus, A. niger, F. moniliforme and R. bataticola with flavonoids, phytosterols and anthroquenones extracts.
