Abstract

Once popularly known as “River of sorrow” the river ‘Damodar’ a river of agony due to indiscriminate discharge of industrial and domestic wastes into it, causing environmental pollution owing to rapid industrialization coupled with influx of population thrust in this region. Despite of being rich reservoir of minerals and fossil fuels, this area is a homeland of a number of anti-carcinogenic plant taxa, which are under the arena of physical threats due to overpopulation, industrialization, mining activities and over exploitation. However, there are no earlier reports of individual application of plants or in mixture of plants in different or specific types of cancers. The holistic approach mentioned in the present study includes compilation and documentation of important medicinal plants of Damodar basin used in the treatment of cancer. The present study includes compilation and documentation of 25 medicinal plants belonging to 18 families along with their botanical names, common names and parts used for therapeutic purposes.
