The present study deals with an efficient in vitro propagation of a medicinally important Gymnema sylvestre R.Br. known for its antidiabetic activity that is being used in folk, ayurvedic and homeopathic systems of medicine since centuries. Among various combinations of growth hormones tested, highest induction of multiple shoots were observed on MS medium supplemented with 2.0mg/l Adenine sulphate+1.0mg/l BAP. Rooting was optimized in half strength MS medium supplemented with 2.0 mg/l IBA. The present protocol employed in this study can be used for large scale production to meet the pharmaceutical demands for commercial purpose.
