Abstract

The present study was conducted with the aim to evaluate the activity of extracts of medicinal plants (Moringa oleifera, Holarrhena antidysenterica, Synzium aromaticum, Allium sativum, Piper nigrum and Azadirachta indica) against Infectious Bursal Disease Virus (IBD virus) in in vitro primary Chicken Embryo Fibroblast (CEF) cell culture. For this, aqueous and alcoholic extracts of leaves/fruit/seed/stem of these medicinal plants were prepared using Soxhlet apparatus. The extracts were tested for cytotoxicity in CEF cell culture and the non-cytotoxic concentration of extracts was used for evaluation of antiviral activity by cytopathic effect inhibition assay. The antiviral activity of the extracts was calculated using Reed and Muench formula. The alcoholic extract of clove of A. sativum, seed of A. indica and aqueous extract of P. nigrum seeds and leaves were found to possess antiviral activity. Extracts of other plants showed no antiviral activity against IBD virus.
