Abstract

Anthracosis is a condition in which carbon particles are accumulated in lungs. Usually It is coal dust that accumulate. Anthracosis is seen in horses, cattle, dogs, and cats that live in industrial areas where soot and coal dust pollute the air. The reports of pulmonary anthracosis are very few. Pulmonary anthracosis is reported in dog. But it is not reported in wild animals. Present communication deals with a report of pulmonary anthracosis in monkey. A female old aged Bonnet monkey was found dead in Lucknow zoo. Before death that monkey was showing clinical symptoms of anorexia, respiratory distress, prostration, debilitaton with grey colour coat and diarrhoea. The postmortem examination revealed congestion in lungs with brownish black areas. Histopathological examination of such areas revealed brownish black deposition showing a case of anthracosis. This may be because Lucknow is a big city and there is a great pollution of dust, smoke etc. which pollute air. This polluted air is inhaled by animals causing accumulation of carbon particles in the lungs.
