Abstract

An auto-immune disorder is a malfunction of the body's immune system that causes the body to attack its own tissues. In other words, the body actually attacks its own cells. These maladies have posed a challenge to both clinicians and researchers ever since the nineteenth century. More than 80 auto-immune diseases (ADs) have been described till date. Some such as type 1 diabetes attacks specific organs, while others such as systemic lupus erythematosus involve multiple organs. Many inherent as well as other factors affect ADs. In modern days, many diagnostic and therapeutic approaches are available those can help to cure these deadly disorders. The present paper communicates in brief about the history, classification, various causes, mechanism, risk factors involved in auto-immune disorders and current developments in clinical as well as research field with respect to therapeutics and its prevention.
