The size of viruses is with a few exceptions below the resolution of the optical microscope. The 1000 times higher resolution of the electron microscope, compared with the light microscope, allows direct observation of small virus particles. Electron microscopy is useful in of both clinical viral diagnoses and viral ultrastructure and pathogenesis studies. In the diagnostic setting, it is particularly valuable in the surveillance of emerging diseases and potential bioterrorism viruses. Negative staining is a rapid procedure used for viewing small particles, such as viruses, in fluids. These studies provide information for treatment and vaccine strategies.
