Abstract

Newcastle disease is the major limiting factor and widespread disease of poultry. A total of 97 cloacal swabs were collected from different categories of free living birds including 40 desi chicken, 23 pigeons, 25 sparrows, 8 turkeys, 1 crow and subjected to Dot- Enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (Dot-ELISA) for detecting the presence of Newcastle disease (NDV). The number of Dot-ELISA positives was more amongst sparrows (16/25) followed by pigeons (9/23), desi chicken (6/40), turkeys (2/8) and crows (1/1). The corresponding haemagglutination titres (HA) of these Dot-ELISA positives indicated that 34 Dot-ELISA positives were had HA titres of less than 2. It is concluded that Dot-ELISA can be used as a screening test for detection of NDV in cloacal swabs or droppings.
