Abstract

A large number of plant products are being investigated for immune response modifying activity. In light of these points, the effect of subacute acephate exposure at the rate of 8.78 mg/kg (GroupT1), 11.70 mg/kg (GroupT2), and 17.55 mg/kg -body weight (GroupT3) once daily for 28 days on immune system and immunomodulatory effect of Tinospora cordifolia extract on acephate induced immunotoxicity in BALB/c mice (Group T4, T5 and T6) have been investigated in the present study. The group C1 and C2 were administered normal saline (as pesticide vehicle control) and aqueous extract of Tinospora cordifolia stems at the dose rate of 100 mg/kg (as plant control) respectively. Clinical symptoms were observed only in high dose group i.e. in T3 whereas in T6 animals these symptoms were less severe showing immunomodulatory effects of plant extract. Congestion was observed in spleen of medium and high dose acephate treated groups. Microscopic examination of spleen revealed lymphoid depletion in medium and high dose of acephate treated groups. No gross and microscopic changes were observed in thymus of all groups. No observable gross and microscopic lesions were found in animals given T. cordifolia extract along with low and medium dose of acephate showing immunomodulatory effect of T. cordifolia extract.
