Abstract

Ninety seven isolates of Escherichia coli were recovered from diarrheal samples collected from various unorganised goat farms of Kashmir valley. The isolates were confirmed biochemically and genotypically by 16 S r RNA PCR. All the confirmed isolates were tested for the prescence of shiga toxin (stx 1 and stx 2), eae and hly genes by multiplex PCR. A total of 11 (12.6%) isolates were found to harbour toxic genes, out of which 8 isolates carried stx1, 1 carried eae, 2 were positive for both stx1 and stx 2 genes and 1 isolate had stx 1, eae and hly genes. Serogrouping results revealed that O103 was predominant serogroup (present in 30 of 87 isolates). Antibiogram was also carried out to determine antibiotic resistance patterns of the isolates to various drugs. Maximum resistance was noted against antibiotics like polymixin and nitrofurantoin (38.46%) whereas maximum sensitivity was noted to chloramphenicol, ciprofloxacin and gentamicin (92%).
