Abstract

The experiment was conducted to evaluate possible immunomodulatory role of Royal jelly in the white leg horn cockrels. The chicks from Group A (n=10) were given Royal jelly 10μl/bird/day orally till 28th day of age. Group B (n= 10) served as control. The chicks from Group A weighed nonsigniticantly higher than control chicks. The haematological values revealed higher total leucocyte count and absolute lymphocyte count in chicks from Group A. Serum albumin. aspartate transaminase. alanine transmninase values were increased while serum globulin levels were reduced in chicks from Group A. There was no marked effect on serum total protein and cholesterol levels. Royal jelly treatment in chicks resulted into signiticant reduction in per cent liver weight, signiticant increase in per cent spleen and thymus weight in Group A. The per cent weight of bursa of Fabricius was non-significantly higher in chicks from Group A. Histologically, hepatocytes showed granular cytoplasm and there was dense population of lymphocytes in bursal follicles, spleen and thymus.
