Abstract

Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV) involves ardeid birds as reservoirs, mosquitoes as vectors, pigs as amplifying hosts and human being as incidental hosts and persists in a zoonotic cycle. In pigs, high viraemia contributes significantly to the maintenance of the disease without showing any overt clinical signs. Serological tests are useful to determine the prevalence of infection in population and to know the geographical distribution of the virus. Currently, enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) has been widely accepted and used for diagnosis of JEV infection in both pigs and humans. A study was conducted to know the presence of JEV antibodies in serum samples of swine by using Indirect IgG ELISA. A total of 250 pig serum samples were collected from different regions of Uttar Pradesh, screened by standardised indirect IgG ELISA using whole virus as antigen. Overall, 164 samples were detected as positive showing overall seropositivity of 65.6% the surveyed areas.
