Abstract

Sujatha V and Suresh C (2020). Prevalence Study on Subclinical Mastitis in Lactating Cows in the Eastern Cauvery Delta Region of Tamil Nadu. Journal of Immunology Immunopathology, 22(2): 147–151.

Subclinical mastitis prevalence study was carried out in lactating cows at field level in Eastern Cauvery Delta region of Tamil Nadu. California Mastitis Test (CMT) kit was used for screening the lactating cows. In this study, a total of 30 dairy farms were screened in the field level demonstrations for subclinical mastitis. Milk samples from 90 lactating dairy cows were tested for subclinical mastitis. Seventy-five lactating cows (83.33%) were positive for subclinical mastitis, whereas 15 (16.67%) were negative. Thirty-seven animals (41.11%) showed single quarter involvement, 24 (26.60%) was two quarters involvement, 9 (10%) was three quarters involvement and 5 (5.56%) animals showed four quarters involvement. In 360 total quarters, 132 quarters were positive for subclinical mastitis. In 132 positive quarters, 55 of left hind quarter, 46 of left fore quarter, 24 of right forequarter and 7 of right hind quarter were positive for subclinical mastitis. This study concluded that the prevalence of subclinical mastitis was 83.33% in lactating dairy cows in Eastern Cauvery Delta region of Tamil Nadu due to poor hygiene practices and inadequate knowledge on scientific managemental practices.
