Detection and Identification of Microsporum canis from Cats

Abstract

Dermatophytosis is a zoonotic infection which affects animals and humans. The dermatophytes, a group of septate fungi, invade superficial keratinized structures like skin, hair and claws. In companion animals the dogs and cats are mainly affected and show alopecia and dermatitis. In cats’ cases of dermatophytes increased during the rainy season. Dermatitis may be caused by the dermatophytes. Present study was carried out to isolate and identify the Microsporum canis in cats for the treatment in the veterinary clinical complex. Clinical samples were collected from the cats in veterinary clinical complex with the history of hair loss, area of alopecia and itching. Samples were inoculated on different media, and studied with lactophenol cotton blue staining. Microsporum canis was identified microscopically by the morphological characteristics of the colony growth and microscopically by microconidia and macroconidia.
