Abstract

Emergence of antimicrobial resistance poses a serious public health threat worldwide. Antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) are not only confined to clinical diseases but they are distributed in environmental pathogens also. So we have to consider these different reservoirs of antibiotic resistance genes that play a significant role to upsurge the antibiotic resistance. This review describes the major known resistance mechanisms and transmission of resistance determinants between soil bacteria, environmental pathogens and clinical isolates. This article provides the conceptual details to understand the complexity of the problem of antibiotic resistance and probable alternatives to combat the problem.
