Abstract

A prevalence study of subclinical ketosis was conducted in the Eastern Cauvery Delta region of Tamil Nadu. The TANUVAS Keto-check kit was used to screen transitional cows during the early lactation stage. A total of 298 dairy cows were screened in the On-Farm Trial (OFT) study for diagnosing subclinical ketosis. Clinical signs of the dairy cows were observed, and farmers’ awareness of metabolic diseases was recorded. The prevalence of subclinical ketosis was 13.76% (41/298 cows) among dairy cows. Moreover, a prevalence of 19.5% (39/200) of subclinical ketosis was noticed in Jersey and Holstein Friesian crossbred lactating cows, while only 2.04% (2/ 98) was observed in native non-descript cows. The yield of native cows was found to be nearly 20% of the production level of crossbreds reared in the region. High levels of lack of awareness of subclinical mastitis in lactating dairy cows in the Eastern Cauvery Delta region of Tamil Nadu, particularly poor hygienic practices and inadequate knowledge of scientific management practices, were noted.
