Abstract

Peripheral blood lymphocytes were harvested from each of the six chicks aged day 1 to day 60 at 5 day interval for histomorphometrical studies following Leishman's stain of the lymphocyte smear preparations. The diameter of the lymphocytes and their nuclei ranged from 3.51–4.91μm and 2.41–3.71μm for the small cells, 5.48–6.50 μm and 4.06–5.11 μm for the medium cells, and 6.98–7.99 μm and 5.36–6.31μm for the large cells. The harvested lymphocyte pool (0.1 ml) revealed a distribution of 16.09–18.01% small cells, 62.26–76.80% medium cells and 6.59–13.83% large cells. The calculated volume of the cell and nucleus was 22.65–62.00 μm3 and 7.33–26.75 μm3, 86.20–143.85 μm3 and 35.06–69.89 μm3, and 178.13–267.19 μm3 and 80.66–131.60 μm3 for the small, medium and large lymphocytes, respectively. The nucleo-cytoplasmic ratio (volumetric) was 0.31–0.77, 0.64–0.95 and 0.83–0.99 for the small, medium and large lymphocytes, respectively.
