Abstract

Role of protein extract of Azadirachta indica plant in immunity to VL infection is reported. The plant extract was shown to inhibit L. donovani replication in vitro in our previous study. As such its role on preferential stimulation of Th1 cell response of CD4 cells was evaluated in VL patients. The plant extracts excelled not only with its ability to drive CD4 cells in VL patients to produce higher IFN-γ but it also possibly transduced a functionally important signal through PKC-α in T-cells of these patients.
