Abstract

Infectious Bovine Rhinotracheitis (IBR) is an important viral infection that manifests varied clinical syndromes in bovines, including reproductive failures. The infected animals act as life long carrier and transmit the infection in the population, if not taken care of. Under the NATP run programme, serosurveillance of IBR was carried out in 17 randomly selected districts of UP from April, 2001 to March, 2004 to generate data for the database. Of the total population, 5% blood samples were collected from cattle and buffaloes randomly. Overall prevalence of IBR was found 18.14% (143 cases), of which cattle were 21.64% and buffaloes 16.31%, out of 777 serum (305 cattle and 472 buffaloes) samples tested by AB-ELISA. Further, the prevalence was recorded 24% in female and 20% in male cattle as against 32.97% in male and 15.6% in female buffaloes. Similarly, adult cattle (>3 years of age) and young buffaloes (<3 years of age) were found to be affected more than their counterparts. Cattle in Shahajahanpur, Faizabad and Chandauli and buffaloes in Bareilly districts were found to be affected a bit higher than those from other districts under study.
