The cognitive and affective abilities of pupils can significantly increase when using a problem-solving strategy in the classroom. In this regard, the study identifies techniques and competences that will be beneficial for student engagement and communication while they complete problem-solving tasks, which may help them to find the appropriate solution. Present study employed both qualitative as well as quantitative method (using questionnaire as the data collection tool) to get all the objectives fulfilled. Students from selected colleges (urban/ rural areas) reveal identical problem solving approaches and give much preference to online sources of information. In depth understanding among college students towards identification of information needs/sources will be helpful in solving their problems in a better manner. Large number of studies has been carried out to identify information needs among students but till date no such work (including urban and rural colleges) in Kashmir has been taken up highlighting step wise problem solving approach among college students.
