A survey of spell checkers for Indian languages

Abstract

Artificial Intelligence (AI) based techniques have been extensively used in design of language technology applications. Spell checker is one of the most popular and widely used applications in this domain. It has become an integral part of editors, search engines, and many such other applications that deal with text. A spell checker typically comprises of two phases: (i) Error detection and (ii) Error Correction. State-of-art spell checkers have been developed for English language due to its international dominance. Although considerable effort has been made to develop efficient spell checkers for popular Indian languages, advanced level spelling tools still need to be developed. This work presents a survey of the existing spelling tools for Indian languages, their strengths and weaknesses, along with a roadmap for an efficient and robust spell checkers for Indian languages.
