Abstract

This study is an attempt to identify the interview process that would enable an organization to look for and select the right talent. An interviewer is a key player in a selection process, as he is the one who is required to correctly assess the assets and liabilities of an applicant for a job and then judge his suitability or unsuitability for it. In order to save costs in terms of time and money, it is essential to weed out early those applicants who are obviously not suited for the job. Applicants who have been screened in can then be made to undergo an elaborate final interview. Interview techniques, such as small talk, facial expression, calculated pause, facial expression and comprehensive introductory question and tools such as laundry list questions, two step probing question, double edged question and softening of direct question, that an interviewer should use for establishing rapport with the applicant, gaining his confidence, making him to open up and probing deeply into him, so that his actual qualities and shortcomings from the job requirement point of view are revealed, have been discussed in the paper. An elaboration on how the information received during the interview are to be interpreted and how the resultant findings should be recorded in the interview report form, have also been brought out on the paper.
