Capacity utilization in central and state warehousing corporations in India

Warehousing corporations basically provide storage facilities to agricultural produce, seeds, manures, fertilizers, agricultural implements and notified commodities. But the CWC & SWC are forcing threats. The trend shows that even where the storage capacities are available with the CWC and SWCs, the FCI created additional capacities which, at present, have resulted in idle capacity with them and it is beyond the scope of these Warehousing Corporations to reverse the trend. The present paper, attempts to appraise the physical performance of SWCs and the CWC in terms of their capacity utilization. The results shows that on an average of last 20 years, warehouses are found using their storage capacity at 77.3 and 77.5 per cent level in case of SWCs and CWC respectively. The t- test was applied to test the validity of the hypothesis that there is no difference in the warehouse capacity utilization between SWCs and CWC.
