In organization of every kind, quality can be regarded as a means to an end -customer satisfaction in all aspects of a product or services. It should be all-pervasive, covering not only the design, performance and reliability of a product or service but the constant improvement of what is on offer. Quality is about attitudes, culture and commitment within an organization. It applies in all organizations: manufacturing, service and public sector, including Government. The world has entered into new millennium- an era of unprecedented changes, upheavals and uncertainty. In the today's world we are highly sensitive about environmental pollution caused by industrial and other sources. And when it comes to chemical industries, the concern for environmental pollution is still more since these industries are highly pollution prone. A good quality system in chemical industries will not only serve the common objectives of customer satisfaction, higher profits and growth but also will be able to control the pollution problem to a considerable extent. The paper first identifies the ideal attributes of a quality system with special reference to chemical industrial units and then suggests the measures to refine these attributes, so as to enhance the productivity.
