Strategic Approaches to Sustainability in the Switchgear Industry: A Comparative Perspective of GE, ABB and Siemens with an Emphasis on the Triple Bottom Line Approach

Abstract

The main aim of this paper is to show how an approach to sustainability, using the Triple Bottom Line (TBL) criterion, can enhance competitive positioning of a firm in the switchgear industry.

This study employs comparative analysis using both review of literature and other secondary data sources. Review of literature includes studying corporate sustainability reports (including detailed ESG disclosures), market reports on the switchgear industry, academic journals and technical white papers. Google Scholar is the primary search engine for this research. With the collected information, the same is organized through a systematic content analysis.

The TBL paradigm encourages the attainment of environmental, social, and economic results, thereby integrating sustainability into company plans and boosting long-term competitive advantage, despite the fact that organizations have varied conceptions of sustainability (Correia, 2019). The following statistics make this clear. On the ecological (planet) front, ABB, Siemens and GE are achieving between 60 to 80 per cent reduction in scope 1 and 2 of GHG emissions. On the social (people) front, ABB, Siemens and GE are investing significantly on AI and AI-enabled technologies that is leading to improvements in their employees’ efficiency. In addition, all three are trying to expand female representation at both entry and senior level roles. On the front of economics (profits), these three firms are making noticeable progress in terms of their revenue growth, profitability, and shareholder values over the past few years. They no longer see sustainability as a cost but as a competitive advantage (ABB, 2023; General Electric, 2023; Siemens, 2023).

This study highlights the interplay between sustainability practices and external influences—such as shifting consumer preferences, regulatory demands and technological progress—emphasizing the necessity of a holistic strategy for achieving long term success in the switchgear industry. It is one of the only studies attempting thus. By consolidating conceptual framework within this research, we take the initial step towards connecting these otherwise fragmented studies and comprehending sustainability as a strategic asset that delivers value beyond mere compliance, fosters competitiveness and crafts a sustainable narrative for companies to communicate both internally and externally, ensuring their continued relevance in a highly contentious switchgear landscape.
