Abstract

This case study examines the merger of JioCinema and Disney+ Hotstar to create a single platform, JioHotstar, that will shape the future of OTT entertainment in India. It explores the reasons for the merger, such as market consolidation, diversification of content, and technological excellence. The move is a calculated one to gain market dominance by leveraging content synergies, with Indian content from JioCinema being brought on board and the international and sports premium content from Disney+ Hotstar.

The study addresses the financial, operational, and infrastructural synergies created by the merger. It evaluates technological advancements such as AI-powered personalisation, ultra-HD streaming, and cloud scalability and examines their role in enhancing user engagement and platform performance. The case also examines how the merger will affect regional content growth and competition in India’s emerging digital streaming landscape.

The analysis identifies that the merger contributes to strengthening content diversification, operational efficiency, technological capability, and regional content accessibility. JioHotstar brings multi-language programming to more users and also explores new genres, while utilising state-of-the-art technologies to enhance user experience. The study also pinpoints the important competitive, regulatory, and operating issues related to the integration of the two platforms.

The case discusses JioHotstar’s future prospects, monetisation and its global aspirations. This detailed analysis gives valuable insights into strategic mergers in the digital media sector and illustrates the impact of technology and localisation on consumer engagement.
